Our Church-run school in Chhattisgarh has received widespread recognition for spreading environmental protection through various activities.
“We have been recognized nationally and internationally. Our intention is to propagate the idea” of environmental conservation, says Father Babu K. Thomas, principal of Bharat Mata (Mother India) English medium higher secondary school in Bilaspur.
Udida Ganguly, a ninth grader from the school, was among eight participants from India who attended the Children and Youth International Conference on climate, held in Brazil in May. The federal ministry of education selected the students.
Students from the school were twice selected to take part in the Volvo Climate program in Sweden.
Furgese Mark Anthony, a 12th grader, was among three Indian representatives to participate in the United Nations Environment Programme in South Korea in August 2009.
The state government, for the last three years, has also recognized the school’s Eco-Club as the top among Indian schools in terms of promoting environmental awareness.
Students also observe various occasions such as Oil-Free Day and Earth Day to promote a healthy environment in the city with programs such as marches and competitions.
They launched a Green Transport Project on Aug. 16, during which they used bicycles or public transport rather than private cars and motorbikes.
The school is also affiliated to the Indian Youth Climate Network, a non-governmental organization
